Kevin Beattie, 57 of Philadelphia — previously known as Kevin Williams and Bernard Grover — was found unresponsive in his cell on July 2, 2024, according to Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Press Secretary Maria Bivens.

Shaquille Tyrin Gibson, 30 of York, his cellmate, is accused of causing numerous injuries to Beattie's body, according to PSP Trooper Megan Frazer.

SCI Camp Hill Superintendent Michael Gourley explained the following scene that played out next:

"Prison staff immediately responded and provided life-saving measures until Lower Allen EMS arrived and advanced life support measures were continued. Beattie was pronounced dead at 8:16 a.m."

Beattie had been housed at SCI Camp Hill since Feb. 3, 2023, for a 22-to 55-year sentence for burglary in Philadelphia, according to Gourley.

His next of kin have been notified. The official cause of death will be determined by the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office. The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating his death, per state policy, as Gourley stated in the initial release.  State Police believe the manner is homicide and are investigating it as such, according to Trooper Frazer. Gibson has been charged with Homicide Murder in the First Degree, according to Frazer.

Beattie/Williams/Grover had a criminal record dating back to 1985 also for burglary in Philadelphia, in fact, all 20 of his cases involved burglary, theft, trespass, or criminal mischief, court records show.

His date of birth on the court documents which was listed as March 3, 1981, led to some confusion among officials, but Sec. Bivens was able to confirm his identities by cross-verifying them with PennDOT records. Her biggest clue that something was off was that he was in SCI Graterford on March 8, 1988, and she was positive he didn't celebrate his seventh birthday in a state prison.

Beattie/Williams/Grover's real birthdate was March 22, 1967, the prison, PennDOT, and Bivens confirmed.

The reason, or reasons, he changed his name — twice  — is unknown.

Details about his personal life were unavailable. His family is invited to reach out with a statement by emailing jpikora@dailyvoice.com

Gibson also had a record of burglary and theft, but he also had drug offenses, and driving under the influence charges, and appears to have been more violent with assault charges, his court records show. His crimes date back to 2013.

Gibson will be transferred to another SCI, according to DOC policy, PSP explained.
